Okui Strawberry and Fruit Stand
Grover Beach
Grover Beach strawberries left on the plant a few extra days, sold beside the field
About
Okui's is a seasonal strawberry stand on Highland in Grover Beach, right next to the fields the berries come from. Because the family sells direct, they leave the fruit on the plant two or three days longer than a commercial pick, so it reaches full color. Albion is the main berry by late spring, Monterey shows up early, and now and then there are pineberries, plus vegetables and flowers.
Charles Okui's grandfather, Charlie Sakamoto, ran a store in Pismo Beach before World War II and started growing berries on five acres next to today's stand in 1948. The next generation grew that to 50 acres of strawberries. Charles joined after finishing Cal Poly in 1990, opened the stand in the late 1990s and added vegetables. His sister Joan runs the stand and the books.
